Douglas began his professional musical career as a U. S. Navy Bandsman from 1972 to 1976, where he played tuba, trombone and electric bass in a variety of ensembles in Florida, Virginia, and aboard the aircraft carrier Forrestal.

Following his military duty, Douglas returned to the University of Arizona in Tucson where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Theory and Composition in 1979. As an undergraduate, he studied composition with Robert Muczynski, John Gibson and Dr. Karl Miller. As a graduate student, he studied composition with Robert Muczynski, orchestration with Dr. Karl Miller, conducting with Dr. Leonard Pearlman and trombone with Tom Ervin.

Douglas became Assisstant Conductor of the Pikes Peak Philharmonic in 1999. Over the next three seasons, he conducted a number of works, including Beethoven's Violin Concerto, Copland's A Lincoln Portrait, and Stravinsky's Octet.

In addition to conducting, Douglas is an active composer and arranger. In January 2005, he and his wife, Martine founded Gleneagle Productions LLC. His arrangements of J. S. Bach's Italian Concerto and Billy Joel's Air (Dublinesque) have been performed by the Virgina Wind Symphony and the Colorado Wind Ensemble.
